As the city prepares to open a new line built at vast expense, the decision to get rid of trams in the s looks more questionable than ever. The last days of the Sydney tram network – in pictures. In the late s Sydney ripped up its tram network, once one of the largest in the world. Now the trams are returning , as the city painfully rebuilds a tiny part of its old system. The construction of But it is a reminder that the city might have looked very different today but for the decision taken in the s — and ruthlessly carried out — to prioritise motor transport.
But the explosion of car traffic in the postwar years persuaded the New South Wales government that urban freeways were the way of the future the first in Australia, the Cahill Expressway, opened in , and trams were an impediment to that vision. The destruction of the network from the mids was swift and brutal. In the bizarre castellated Fort Macquarie depot at Circular Quay was demolished to make way for the Opera House, and the lines along George Street were torn up.
Here is everything you need to know. Melbourne has been the leader in light rail for decades, and now the rest of Australia is catching up! So why have we suddenly got tram fever?

John Kennedy, 54, the well-respected Canberra-based XPT driver who was killed in the derailment near Wallan, was a victim of many years of government neglect of our railway system. The only possible consolation is that John died doing the work he loved best – which was train driving. John had been a senior manager with NSW railways, but took a redundancy to become a train driver. John Kennedy in the XPT.

The railway workers’ union says last week’s train derailment at Wallan could have been prevented if the service had been running under Victorian rather than national rail regulations. The driver and pilot of the Sydney-to-Melbourne XPT service were both killed when the train came off the tracks shortly before pm on Thursday. A fire which destroyed the Wallan signal box about three weeks ago left the signals out of action along the section of rail line. The XPT had been continuing to run along the main line through Wallan at speeds of between kph and kph.
However, on Thursday the ARTC changed the route moving trains through Wallan from the main line to a passing loop line with a 15kph speed restriction. Ms Grigorovitch said it appeared there was a range of contributing factors in the derailment. The cranes will require about seven lifts over three days to remove the carriages and locomotives from the track. Ms Grigorovitch said the derailment highlighted the “systemic neglect of interstate and regional rail infrastructure”.
She said the Melbourne-Sydney line should be the “jewel in the crown” of Australia’s rail network but was instead known as “the goat track” because of its poor condition and “mud holes”. Investigators finished preliminary work at the site on Saturday and released the track and train back to their respective owners.
